Astrophyllite Aegirine rock. Kola, Russia.

This is a thin section microscope slide of a rare rock from the Khibiny Area of the Kola Peninsular. This area is the home to many very special minerals, formed by the intrusion of an alkali syenite into existing pre-cambrian rocks. Instead of attempting a description I suggest viewing the following excellent web page on the area; http://maurice.strahlen.org/kola/khibiny.htm.

A slide made from beautiful Astrophyllite, orange red, with minor green aegirine and nepheline.
