Syenite, Nepheline. Borrolan, Assynt, Scotland

This is a thin section microscope slide of Borralanite, a Nepheline Seyenite from an intrusion near Ledmore, Assynt, Sutherland. An interesting and rare rock containing Alkali Feldspar and Nepheline, ( pseudoleucite ??)the brown crystals are Garnet of a type known as Melanite, with many inclusions giving a 'chequered' appearance in xpl, also mica. These slides often show some interesting symplectite intergrowth at high magnification. Collected from the type locality.
